ABSTRACT
Brandon Marin is responsible for the research, development, and integration of new dielectric materials and new processes for substrates in Intel’s semiconductor packaging division. Substrate packaging is the method of manufacturing the assembly that supports the connection of the silicon microprocessor (die) to the system interface or motherboard; it comprises the integrated heat spreader (IHS), substrate, underfill, and passive components designed to support and connect the die. In this talk, Brandon will discuss the implications and considerations when developing next-gen dielectric materials in semiconductor substrates and general trends in materials development at Intel and in the wider semiconductor industry. Brandon will also discuss the future of heterogeneous integration, an indispensable part of extending and even breaking Moore’s law.
BIOSKETCH
Marin is a material pathfinding engineer at Intel Corporation in Chandler, AZ. He earned his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Southern California (USC), and his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of California, San Diego under the supervision of Professor Darren Lipomi. At UC San Diego, Brandon worked on metal-graphene composites and soft materials to enhance light-matter interactions for biosensing applications. In his brief tenure at Intel, Brandon has developed many first-of-kind materials and technologies responsible for pushing Intel’s heterogeneous integration to new limits. These efforts have resulted in the filing of over 70 patents and an Intel Achievement Award (Intel’s highest award). Brandon and his wife Anastasia live in Gilbert, AZ with their son, Malakai and Great Dane-mix, Ivy. They are expecting their second child in December. Brandon enjoys surfing, skateboarding, playing guitar and drums, DIY mechanics, and exploring the Southwest on foot or by 4WD.
