The Tudor Hill Marine Atmospheric Observatory in Bermuda, which was a United Datates Navy base during the Cold War, is now being used to monitor air pollution and other atmospheric information. CHEE professor Armin Sorooshian recently spoke with Bermudian newspaper Royal Gazette about the importance of monitoring the atmosphere and climate impacts.

“The island of Bermuda has historically been a critically important location for atmospheric research since it serves as an excellent ‘marine laboratory’ with long-term data sets collected at surface measurement sites," Sorooshian said. “Its location helps with studies of transported gas and particle emissions from distant continents.”

Sorooshian previously received a $30 million NASA grant to further his research on the interactions between aerosol particles and clouds. The Aerosol Cloud Meteorology Interactions Over the Western Atlantic Experiment, (ACTIVATE) is part of NASA's third series of Earth Venture investigations, focuses on marine boundary layer clouds over the western North Atlantic Ocean and their critical role in the planet’s energy balance.
