Graduate Application Frequently Asked Questions

Our application opens on August 15 for the following academic year.

We have a priority deadline of December 15, and a final deadline of January 15. Our department begins reviewing applications after the priority deadline of December 15, so it is recommended that you apply before the priority deadline.

Refer to Admissions FAQ's, which will answer most of your questions and includes information about who to contact for more help with GradApp.

Review the admissions requirements for the chemical engineering and environmental engineering programs. Please note that accelerated master's degrees are available to UA undergraduate students only.

We highly recommend that you begin communicating with professors whose research most interests you before you submit your application or soon thereafter. Information about faculty research can be found on the departmental research page and faculty directory where you can find links to some individual research group websites.

We do not currently offer any graduate programs online.

The department does not offer fee waivers.

Our department typically only accepts new students into our programs in the fall semester, but we occasionally admit students during the spring semester provided the applicant finds a faculty advisor that will support their admission.

It is possible to apply after the deadline if you have a faculty advisor who is willing to support your application. If the application has already been closed, you will also need to contact the Graduate Program Coordinator to request that the application be reopened and let them know which professor you will be working with. Keep in mind that much of our funding will be decided soon after the December 15 priority deadline.

We can't guarantee acceptance, however, you could enroll in graduate level courses as a non-degree seeking student at the University of Arizona or another reputable engineering program. Once you prove your aptitude at graduate level courses, your application will be considered. It is also very helpful to have a professor who is willing to support your application review.

Please send any additional or updated materials to the Graduate Program Coordinator.

Generally, most of your letters of recommendation should come from professors who are familiar with your previous research, academic aptitude and work ethic. However, if it has been a while since you completed your last degree, please also include previous or current supervisors who are familiar with your technically relevant work experience.

GRE is optional and is not required for consideration. Official scores from the GRE (university code is 4832, environmental engineering code is 1103, chemical engineering is 1001).

For international students, the University requires official scores from TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, CEFR or other accepted English proficiency exam. Review the comprehensive list of acceptable tests with their minimum accepted scores. The Graduate College does not accept Duolingo for University of Arizona graduate applicants. Note that the Department of Chemical & Environmental Engineering does not offer conditional admission for applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements of an English Proficiency test.

There are very limited exceptions to the English proficiency requirement. See information about exceptions to this requirement on the Graduate College Admissions FAQ's.

The University of Arizona's institution code for sending official electronic score reports from ETS is 4832, environmental engineering code is 1103 and chemical engineering is 1001.

Yes, your recommendations will still be considered. But we strongly recommend that you encourage your letter writers to submit their recommendations prior to the deadline.

Typically decisions are made by the end of March.

Funding is provided for PhD students admitted to the program through research assistantships or teaching assistantships unless the student receives funding from their employer. Typically funding is not provided for master’s students. The Graduate College administers additional funding opportunities. Current UA students can browse many additional opportunities by visiting the UA's Scholarship Universe.

We suggest that you visit CHEE's research page and faculty directory where you can find links to group research websites.

Our admissions requirements include courses that we would expect you to have taken to be successful in our programs. Review the admissions requirements for chemical engineering and environmental engineering. Please note that accelerated master's degrees are available to UA undergraduate students only.

Graduate units earned may be transferable. See: Acceptability of Graduate Transfer Credit. Once admitted, students who wish to transfer coursework toward a UA graduate program must submit an Evaluation of Transfer Credit form in UA GradPath to have transfer course work evaluated for eligibility. This should be done before the end of their first year of graduate study.
