Gene and I just returned from a two-week trip celebrating our 55th wedding anniversary. We traveled in Northern California and southern Oregon, and it was very “cool” in every way!

Our son, Paul, a graduate of Cal Berkeley, is an engineering manager at Rain Bird in Tucson, and our daughter, Christa, is an assistant professor at USC in the biosciences. Granddaughter Kathryn (12) and grandson Theodor (9) live in Culver City, California. In addition to being excellent students, Kate is on the Culver City Middle School volleyball team and Theo is playing baseball, both Little League and Fall Ball.

We have endowed a scholarship in the College of Education in memory of my brother, Timothy K. Schumann, and an engineering scholarship, shared by the CHEE and ECE departments.

Charlie Botsford

Class of 1982, MS in Chemical Engineering

I graduated in 1982 with an MSChE. Jost Wendt was my advisor. I work at AeroVironment, where I manage projects and do business development. AeroVironment manufactures unmanned aerial systems and electric vehicle chargers and test systems. I manage the West Coast Electric Highway, which includes 56 DC fast-charging stations in Oregon and Washington. Chemical Engineering magazine has published several of my articles on energy and pollution control. Also, I've posted many articles on electric vehicle charging on EnergyCentral.com. I have an article on the economics of nuclear power in the works. My hobbies include writing, wood and rock carving, travel, and didgeridoo.

I am a sales representative for Rigaku Americas Corp., and we manufacture and sell analytical X-ray instrumentation, including X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence and computed tomography systems for both academic and industrial applications. I cover California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, Alaska and Hawaii.

When I was a UA engineering student in 2006, I founded African Children’s Charities, a nonprofit organization headquartered in Tucson, Arizona. ACC sponsors an orphanage in Uganda and provides quality care and support to each child. The organization also helps American senior citizens to have a sense of purpose. Recently, I organized and led a University of Arizona team on a lifesaving project for an orphaned Ugandan boy with a severely deformed spine, which was extensively featured on television.

The photo is of me and Dr. Patricia Bragg last year. Has anyone used Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar or seen her products in the stores? She is an amazing lady!

I am happy to share some of my other accomplishments:

• Most importantly, I am a proud father.
• Many of my game-changing tech innovations are patent-pending.
• In 2008, I was nominated for the World Health Organization water technology expert roster.
• Between 2008 and 2013, I was the recipient of 15 distinguished awards related to water tech projects around the world.
• In 2009, I received the WC&P award for my contribution in addressing the ongoing water crisis in California and other places.
• In 2010, I led teams to clean up the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, which is recognized as the worst oil spill in U.S. history.
• Throughout my career, I have led and managed numerous state-of-the-art technical projects for the federal government (EPA, military, DOI, DOE, etc.); state governments (Arizona, Texas, Wisconsin, California, Nevada, Missouri, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado, etc.), as well as Fortune 500 companies such as Intel, ConocoPhillips, BP, etc.
• I am currently president and chief technology officer of FWM Technologies, responsible for innovating the "Next Big Tech Thing."

Jill Craven

Alumnus Devin Wiley and I live in Hillsboro, Oregon, and work in the technology development division at Intel. In addition to engineering, Devin consults on Intel's medical advisory board. In our free time we have enjoyed the hiking and whitewater kayaking that the great Pacific Northwest has to offer. We are also expecting our first child on Oct. 31.

I have enjoyed being pregnant at the same time as two other 2007 alumni. Vicky Karanikola

I am an assistant research professor in the UA department of chemical and environmental engineering, and I am committed to providing safe and sustainable drinking water. Alongside research and teaching, I am invested in Engineers Without Borders, as the newly elected vice president of the Mountain Region Steering Committee and faculty mentor for the UA chapter.

Dylan Kline

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it to the alumni tailgate during Homecoming week, but I would like to provide a quick update.

After graduating in May 2016, I moved to Maryland to pursue a PhD in chemical engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park. I am concurrently employed at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, where I am supporting projects such as the James Webb Space Telescope, Restore-L, GOES-R, Mars 2020, OSIRIS-REx and much more.

I briefly came back for a visit to the UA in August to move my sister into her dorm, and I told Dr. Blowers and Dr. Sorooshian that if they had any questions about NASA, I would try my hardest to answer them to the best of my ability. That offer is extended to the entire department, and anyone else interested!
