The University of Arizona Office of the Provost recognized CHEE assistant professor of practice Byron Hempel as an Arizona Champion. Arizona Champions are UA faculty and staff members who go above and beyond in their work. Hempel was honored for his work at a UA Men's Basketball game.

"Byron is deserving of this recognition for his active support of colleagues and graduate students in the use of inclusive teaching strategies," his nomination reads.

Hempel teaches classes focusing on the food-energy-water nexus and the grand challenges faced by environmental engineers in the 21st century.

Hempel is a two-time graduate from the UA, having earned his master’s degree in 2017 and his doctoral degrees in 2019, both in chemical engineering.

“CHEE’s excellence in water research, in addition to the hidden gems of nature in Tucson, drew me here," Hempel said. "The progressive teaching nature of the department and college have captured me to stay long term.”
